Student Defense Issues Statement in Support of Dr. Miguel Cardona for Secretary of Education

Student Defense issued a statement in advance of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions hearing to consider the nomination of Dr. Miguel Cardona to serve as U.S. Secretary of Education.

“American students are ready for a change, after four long years of Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump,” said Student Defense President Aaron Ament. “Throughout his career Dr. Cardona has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to fostering opportunity and equity. We look forward to Dr. Cardona’s confirmation, and to working with the Biden administration to ensure the higher education system lives up to its promise of empowerment and economic mobility, swiftly address the student debt crisis, and protect students from predatory schools.”

Student Defense has published a set of policies and initiatives, the 100 Day Docket, that represent concrete reforms and student protections that the Department of Education can implement quickly, using existing administrative and statutory authorities. Proposals include ways to reform the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, expand debt relief to hundreds of thousands of defrauded student borrowers, 100 Day Docket proposals have been endorsed by members of Congress, state attorneys general and others.
